DeWayne Donald Merkel

Private graveside services for DeWayne D. Merkel, 73, of Bettendorf, will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion #26 of Davenport. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home is assisting the family.

DeWayne passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. He was born on December 11, 1952, in Davenport, to Donald and Patricia (Erling) Merkel. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era and later enjoyed a long career as an HVAC Installer for Freed Heating and Air in Moline.

DeWayne was an enthusiast of outdoor and competitive activities, especially fishing, playing Texas Hold 'em, and cornhole. He was an avid fan of dirt track racing, and he thoroughly enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.

Survivors include his significant other, Annie Stahle; his son, Brian (Amanda) Merkel; his daughter, Elizabeth (Alex) Elmore; his five grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Payton, Leah, Madison, and Aidan; and two sisters, Carolyn Christner and Brenda (Jim) Meland. He was preceded in death by his parents.
