Obituary

Evalie M. Grothusen, 87, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away peacefully at Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf after an extended illness.

A service celebrating Evalie’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, February 20, 2026, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, where she was a devoted and faithful member for many years. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. She will be laid to rest at Davenport Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Clarissa Cook Hospice House. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.

Evalie was born on March 17, 1938, in Beardstown, Illinois, to Olaf and Wilma (Surratt) Brockhouse. She graduated from LeClaire High School and went on to attend secretarial college, beginning a career marked by dedication and quiet professionalism.

On June 4, 1966, she married the love of her life, Jack R. Grothusen, in Davenport, Iowa. Together they built a life grounded in faith, family, and friendship. Jack preceded her in death on December 17, 2015, but their love story remained one of the greatest joys of her life.

Throughout the years, Evalie worked at Alcoa, R.S. Stover, and later served at St. Paul Lutheran Church for several years before her retirement. Her work at the church was especially meaningful to her, as it allowed her to serve the congregation she loved so dearly.

Evalie was an active member of P.E.O. and a former member of the Bettendorf Lionels. She valued community and fellowship, forming lasting friendships wherever she went.

Evalie and Jack shared a love of travel and adventure, exploring many beautiful places around the world. Some of their most treasured memories were made at their condo in Door County, Wisconsin, where they formed dear and lasting friendships. Whether traveling, playing cards, biking, or simply gathering around the table, Evalie found her greatest happiness in time spent with those she loved most — her family.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Krista (Michael) Decker of Bettendorf and Erick (Liz) Grothusen of Bettendorf; her grandchildren, Jake (Sidney) Decker, Ben Decker, Emma Decker, Jack Grothusen, Adam Grothusen, and Mia Grothusen; her brother, Bob (Carol) Brockhouse of Bettendorf; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Evalie was preceded in death by her sister, Glenna Pendleton, and her brothers, Earl Brockhouse and Kenneth Brockhouse.

Evalie will be remembered for her steady faith, her warm heart, and the deep love she had for her family and friends.
