Evalyn M. Kerr, 82, a resident of Pleasant Valley, Iowa died Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 24, 2004 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Genesis Visiting Nurses Association.
She was born in Sioux City, Iowa on January 11, 1922, the daughter of Edward & Myrtle (Woods) Irwin. On January 31, 1942, she was united in marriage to Wayne E. Kerr in Omaha, Nebraska. Wayne preceded her in death on June 10, 1990.
When Wayne was honorably discharged from the Army Air-Corps following World War II, he & Evalyn settled on the family farm in Pleasant Valley. There they grew onions, tomatoes and other produce for many years. In addition, Evalyn was fondly known as the “Strawberry Lady” for the wonderful strawberries she raised. Many will remember that her strawberry fields were a tribute to her hard work and never had a weed in it. Their hard work didn’t end when their truck garden closed for the season. During the winters, the family had evergreen boughs shipped in from the north and made countless evergreen grave blankets for distribution to many local area florists and cemeteries.
Evalyn & Wayne loved the times spent playing cards and visiting with their many friends. During her son’s school years, she was very active and a tireless volunteer for the PTA and other school activities.
Even though she will be deeply missed, she will always be fondly remembered by all who knew & loved her. Her family, above all else, was the most important part of her life and her memory will live on in their hearts forever.
Those left to honor her memory include her sons & daughters-in-law, Jeff & Pam Kerr of Princeton, Iowa and Steve & Karen Kerr of Bettendorf; her grandchildren, Melissa Miller & her husband, Julius, Jennifer Woods & her husband, Aaron, Jason Kerr & his wife, Jennifer and Joshua Kerr & his wife, Shawna; her great-grandchildren, Jacob & Samantha Miller, Madisyn Woods and Christopher Kerr; and her sister-in-law, Joann Irwin of Sioux City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Hopp; and her brothers, Edwin Irwin, Andy Irwin & Al Irwin; her brother-in-law, Russell Kerr & his wife, Doris; and her nephew, Dennis Kerr.
