Gene D. Belvel, 80, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of his family, on Sunday, August 2, 2026.

Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of Gene's life during visitation from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 A.M. on Monday. In honor of Gene's service and dedication to his fellow veterans, memorials may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Born on May 29, 1946, in Davenport, Iowa, Gene was the son of Ted and Marie (Gatrel) Belvel. A proud 1966 graduate of Bettendorf High School, he answered the call to serve his country shortly after graduation by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. 

Gene courageously served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1970. His bravery and dedication were recognized with numerous military honors, including the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with four Combat Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Navy Achievement Medal with "V," the Combat Action Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge. He carried the pride of his service with quiet dignity throughout his life.

On November 17, 1973, Gene married the love of his life, Suzanne Thompson, in Davenport. Together they built a life grounded in love, devotion, and family, sharing more than five decades of marriage and countless treasured memories.

Gene dedicated much of his career to public service, working at the Rock Island Arsenal and later with the Rock Island Corps of Engineers as the operator of the historic swing bridge. Earlier in his career, he also worked at French and Hecht in Davenport. He took pride in every job he held and was known as someone who could always be counted on.

When he wasn't working, Gene found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He loved spending time fishing, cheering on his favorite NASCAR drivers, and, much to the amusement of those who knew him, he rarely missed an episode of Little House on the Prairie. Yet nothing brought him greater joy than being surrounded by his family. He especially treasured every moment with his three granddaughters, who held a special place in his heart and brought endless pride to their grandfather.

Those who will forever cherish Gene's memory include his loving wife, Suzanne; his son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Emily Belvel of Sigourney, Iowa; his beloved granddaughters, Autumn, Makenzie, and Brianna; his brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Patricia Belvel of Pleasant Valley, Iowa; along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

He was welcomed into eternal peace by his parents, Ted and Marie Belvel; and by his sister and brother-in-law, Madge and Moe DeSmet.

Gene will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, loyal brother, faithful friend, and patriotic Marine whose quiet strength, unwavering love for his family, and honorable life will remain an enduring inspiration to all who knew and loved him.
