Gene A. Sperry, 76, of Bettendorf, Iowa died Thursday, May 23, 2024, at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House.
Services to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, May 29th at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
Gene was born in Davenport on November 10, 1947, the son of Eugene and Elizabeth (Hazen) Sperry. He was a U.S. Army veteran from August of 1966 to August of 1969 serving as an engineer attached to the Signal Corps in Germany.
On October 18, 1969, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mary E. Druhl in Davenport. She preceded him in death on September 6, 2016.
Gene was employed as a Construction Engineer in commercial, industrial, and institutional construction for nearly 50 years, retiring in October of 2012.
He was a tireless volunteer for the Corps of Engineers where he received the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service. Gene was also an avid fisherman and very active in his church where he served as Head Trustee and a bible study leader.
Those left to honor his memory include his children, Kristy (Blair) Ehlers of Davenport and Pastor Kent Sperry of Beulah, North Dakota; his grandchildren, David, Ashley, Rachel, Caleb, Grace, Lizzie, Jacob and Sarah; and his great-grandchildren, Zoey. Dominic and Ayden. Gene is also survived by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, and wonderful friends.
In addition to his wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Benson; his brother, Darrell Sperry; and his parents.
