There will be visitation for Hartmut at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, IA from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Thursday.
Hartmut Fahrion was born in Dachau, Germany on January 3, 1950. When he was 10, he and his mother moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When he turned 14, they moved to the United States. Hartmut was excited to get to America because he loved the fast American cars.
He became a United States citizen and when he turned 18, he joined the US Army and spent a year in Vietnam. During that time, he was also in Korea at the DMZ, Cambodia, and Thailand. He spent 23 years in the Army and retired in 1991. He had been a tank commander, a recruiter and other positions. He was awarded 5 Army Good Conduct Medals, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and the Combat Infantry Badge, to name a few. He was able to go on the first Vietnam Veterans Honor Flight to DC.
He loved talking with people and spent the next several years in sales. He retired (again) from Central Scott Telephone as the Sales Director in 2013. Still not ready to quit working, he started driving school bus for Davenport Schools and really enjoyed the 13 years there.
He was an active member of American Legion Post 26. He was a true do-it-yourself person. He fixed a lot of cars in his younger years and loved doing projects around the house. His hobby was flying remote control airplanes. He especially loved helping people and volunteered at King’s Harvest for many years, serving the poor and homeless.
Those left to honor his memory include: his wife Mary Fahrion, married 41 years, his daughter, Cheryl ( Brad ) Madigan, Phoenix, Arizona, his son, David Fahrion, East Peoria, Illinois, his daughter, Kristen ( Phil ) Fernstaedt, Springfield, Illinois, his daughter Amy Fahrion Schurman, East Peoria, Illinois, as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren
