James L. Weibel, 82, of Long Grove, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 in DeWitt, Iowa.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Monday, August 10, 2026 at 10:00 a.m., at Chambers Funeral Home in Eldridge, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jim was born February 5, 1944, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Frank & Gertrude (Swick) Weibel.

After graduating high school, he earned a Bachelor’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University and later a Master’s degree in Art Education.

Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968, Jim served as an infantryman in Vietnam in 1969. He was united in marriage to Ida M. Legner on August 11, 1973 in Davenport, Iowa.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Ida; his sons and daughters-in-law, Matthew & Sarah Weibel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jason & Sarah Weibel of West Des Moines, Iowa and Aaron & Cassandra Weibel of West Des Moines; his foster son, Ho Tran of Rochester, New York; his grandchildren, Brandon, Elizabeth, Kaitlyn, Seth and Felix; his brothers, John (Donna) Weibel of Manchester, Iowa, Frank (Mary) Weibel of Ankeny, Iowa, Phillip (Claire) Weibel of Gillette, Wyoming, Paul (Kathy) Weibel of Claremore, Oklahoma and Glen (Karen) Weibel of Joplin, Missouri; his sisters, Rose (Ed) Snowbarger of Kirksville, Missouri, Glida (Larry) Reamsnyder of Clovis, New Mexico and Jo Ann (Bill) Smith of Huntsville, Alabama; and several nieces and nephews.

During his life, Jim enjoyed being involved with his community by volunteering with many various youth activities. Jim volunteered as a soccer coach and referee for the Family Y Youth soccer program. He was involved with the Boy Scouts for many years as an Assistant Scoutmaster and later Scoutmaster for Troop 203.

He was on the Long Grove Park Board for many years, where he constructed the disc golf course. In later years, he volunteered to construct and maintain off-road bike trails in Scott County Park and Westbrook Park in DeWitt.

Jim enjoyed being in nature and visited many national parks. He loved to hike, bike, kayak, camp, rock climb and rappel. He competed in races, including the Bix 7, the Maquoketa triathlon, Dubuque’s B-rrry Scurry, and the Pikes Peak Ascent half marathon. He also rode RAGBRAI and many off-road bike trails. Jim loved his family and enjoyed sharing his love for the outdoors with his grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Caroline.
