Janice Whiteside

Graveside services for Janice L. Whiteside, 85, of Bettendorf, Iowa, will be 11:00 am on Wednesday at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. Family will greet friends on Wednesday from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, Iowa. Those wishing to attend the graveside service will meet at the funeral home at 10:30 on Wednesday.

Janice passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa, surrounded by her family.

Janice L. Melow was born on November 22, 1936, in Rock Island, Illinois, the daughter of John and Katherine (Ohge) Melow. She married Rodney D. Whiteside on June 14, 1959, in Rock Island, Illinois. He preceded her in death on August 31, 2001.

Janice received her teaching degree from Western Illinois Teachers College and taught English at Riverdale High School and later, Accounting at AIC. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Bettendorf, Iowa.

Survivors include her children, Douglas (Caryn Berkowitz) Whiteside of Iowa City, Julie (Steve) Smith of Maple Valley, Washington, Susan (Mike) Shonts of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Amy Roberts of Bettendorf, Iowa; her grandchildren, Austin Shonts, Jordan Smith, Sophia Smith, and Sierra Roberts; her 2 step-grandchildren, Ethan and Ryan Shonts.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Rodney.
