John David Berry

Funeral services for John David Berry, 80, will be 11:00 am on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at Sacred City Church, Bettendorf. Burial will take place at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery, Davenport, where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion #26. Family will greet friends on Friday, June 12, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, IA.

John David Berry of Des Moines, Iowa, went to be with his Lord early Thursday, June 4, 2026, after several months of declining health.

John was born on July 6, 1945, to Nicholas D. Berry and Betty L. Berry during the final months of World War II while his father was deployed in military service. He was the eldest of five children and was a loving brother to Dorothy, Jim, Dan, and Nancy.

As a child and young man, John attended Bettendorf Gospel Tabernacle, later known as First Assembly of God. He was active in the church youth group and participated in athletics while attending Bettendorf High School.

At age 17, John answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army during the early years of the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he worked as a welder at the Rock Island Arsenal until his retirement. He later became the proprietor of Berry Express, a transportation service company that served clients nationwide.

John married Betty Jo Moore in 1966, and together they welcomed two daughters, Tina and Gail. Betty preceded him in death by one month. John was also blessed to share 38 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth Berry.

Together, John and Mary participated in numerous mission trips around the world and enjoyed traveling together. Through Mary's unwavering grace, forgiveness, and Christlike love, John was able to enjoy a rich and fulfilling life.

John was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas D. Berry; his mother, Betty L. Berry; his brothers, Jim Berry and Dan Berry; and his sister, Dorothy "De" Reynolds.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Berry; his daughters, Tina Craig and Gail Vander Esch; his beloved granddaughter, Chloe Renae; his brother-in-law, Tommy Reynolds; and his sister, Nancy (Corey) Black. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and business associates who will cherish his memory.

John's life was marked by service to his country, dedication to his family, commitment to his faith, and a spirit of hard work and perseverance. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
