Jon M. Gimmy, age 78, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House, after facing a long and courageous journey with a degenerative muscle disease.
A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, 2025 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf, concluding with Masonic Services at 7:00 p.m. A service to celebrate Jon’s life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 1809 Mississippi Blvd. in Bettendorf—a church Jon called home for many years. Memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church in his honor.
Jon was born on September 16, 1946, in Wood River, Illinois, to Loyal and Maymie (Doerr) Gimmy. From a young age, Jon was deeply thoughtful and intellectually curious. He pursued education with a quiet determination, earning his bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis and his master's degree from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.
While still in high school, Jon met Roberta Lynn Welch—the girl who would become the love of his life. They were married on August 14, 1965, at East Alton Methodist Church and built a life together rooted in faith, love, and mutual respect.
Jon wore many hats throughout his life—English teacher, insurance underwriter, and part-time pastor in the communities of Wilton and Moscow, Iowa. Regardless of his title, his calling was always to serve, to teach, and to uplift those around him with wisdom, kindness, and faith.
A man of deep spiritual conviction, Jon was a devoted member of Asbury United Methodist Church and a proud and active Mason. He was involved with both the Hamilton Masonic Lodge and the Early Morning Lodge of Bettendorf, served as the State of Iowa Masonic Chaplain, and was a member of the Davenport Scottish Rite. These roles brought him not just purpose, but lifelong friendships and opportunities to guide others in faith and fellowship.
Jon’s passions were simple but meaningful: reading, studying the Bible, and participating in the annual “Walk to Emmaus”—an event that perfectly reflected his spiritual devotion and love of quiet reflection.
He leaves behind his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Roberta; two sons, Jon (Tammy) Gimmy Jr. of Jacksonville, Illinois, and Robert M. Gimmy of Davenport, Iowa; three grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and a circle of dear friends who were blessed to share in his life.
He is now reunited with his parents, Loyal and Maymie; his half-brothers, Robert, William, and Kris; and his cherished parents-in-law.
Jon will be remembered for his gentle heart, his unwavering faith, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His was a life well-lived, and his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
