Obituary

Joni K. King, 71, of Eldridge, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Fieldstone of DeWitt, surrounded by the love of her family.

A celebration of Joni’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge. Visitation will take place from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or to Stead Family Children's Hospital in Iowa City. Arrangements are being handled by Chambers Funeral Home.

Joni was born on November 28, 1954, in Rantoul, Illinois, the beloved daughter of Bernard “Bernie” and Yvonne (Kruse) Beranek. On June 28, 1975, she married the love of her life, Gary R. King. Together they built a life rooted in faith, family, friendship, and unwavering devotion to one another.

A faithful and active member of Faith Lutheran Church for many years, Joni devoted herself to helping young people grow in their faith and confidence. As a High School Youth Group Leader and Confirmation Small Group Leader, she had a remarkable ability to connect with teenagers and make them feel seen, valued, and loved. Her encouragement, compassion, and steady presence helped shape the lives of many young people in both the church and the community.

Above all else, Joni's greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and an adoring grandmother who treasured every moment spent with those she loved. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she delighted in celebrating their accomplishments and creating cherished memories together.

Joni also expressed her love through the simple joys of everyday life. Joni enjoyed gardening and took great pride in her beautiful flower gardens, where she spent countless hours nurturing her plants. She also loved to travel and make memories with her family. A highlight of her later years was celebrating her 50th wedding anniversary with a special family trip to Hawaii, creating memories that will be cherished forever. Family gatherings were often made sweeter by her famous cookies and beautifully decorated cupcakes, treats that became a tradition and a symbol of the care she poured into everything she did. Her warm smile, generous heart, and ability to make everyone feel welcome will be remembered by all who knew her.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of nearly 51 years, Gary; her daughter, Kristi (Nick) Cummins of Newton, Iowa; her son, Corey (Stacie) King of Montgomery, Ohio; her beloved grandchildren, Colin and Allyson Cummins, and Kylie, Hayden, and Tyler King; her sister, Cindy Beranek of Robbins, Iowa; her cherished feline companions, Shadow and Piper; and many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love and friendship.

Joni was welcomed into eternal peace by her parents and her brother, Terry Beranek, who preceded her in death.

Though her family’s hearts are heavy with loss, they find comfort in the countless memories she leaves behind and in the example of faith, kindness, and love that she lived every day. Joni’s legacy will continue in the lives she touched, the family she cherished, and the love she so freely shared with others.
