Larry Dean Long, 71, a resident of LeClaire, Iowa died on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Trinity Rock Island following an extended illness.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, April 9, 2012 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire, Iowa. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to LeClaire Fire Department or Star Gift’s for Kids.
Larry was born in Moravia, Iowa on November 29, 1940, a son to William & Mary Horstman Long. Larry enjoyed his earlier years working on the family farm in Moravia.
After moving to the Quad Cities Larry worked for the City of Davenport as a bus driver. He then went to work as a welder for John Deere Plow & Planter Works in Moline, Illinois retiring after 30 years of faithful service. Following his retirement, he stayed active as owner & operator of Long’s Lawn Care. In earlier years, Larry worked for the City of Davenport as a bus driver.
On December 20, 1974, he was united in marriage to Cathy J. Powell in Rock Island, Illinois.
Larry & Cathy enjoyed riding their 3-wheeled trike.
Larry built his trike from scratch and loved the comradery of riding with his many friends all over the mid-west.
He was also an avid golfer, enjoyed deer hunting, snow mobiling and 4-wheeling.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Cathy; his daughter, Heather (Mike) Becker of Riverdale, Iowa; his sons, Loren (Kari) Long of LeClaire and Barry Long of LeClaire; his step-daughter, Shelly Munden of Overland Park, Kansas; his step-son Scott Powell of Marion, Iowa; his grandchildren, Sarah Munden, Samantha Munden,
Airman Michael Long, USAF, Trinity Long, Jami Becker and Taylor Becker; his sister, Marie Padget of Moravia; his brothers, Kenny (Judy) Long of Moravia and Rick (Gordie) Long of Cincinnati, Iowa; and several nieces & nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his twin-sister, Leta Pettibone; his brother, Jay Long; and his parents.
