Lois F. Bittner

March 12, 1940 — October 21, 2025

Eldridge

Lois F. Bittner, 85, a resident of Grand Haven Retirement Community in Eldridge, Iowa, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Chambers Funeral Home in Eldridge. The family encourages everyone to wear casual attire or Iowa Hawkeye apparel in honor of Lois’s spirit and love for her team. She will be laid to rest at a private family graveside service at Oakdale Memorial Gardens in Davenport. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clarissa Cook Hospice House or to the Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Lois was born on March 12, 1940, on the family farm in rural Geneva, Iowa, the daughter of Lester and Leola (Dohlman) Roegner. She graduated from Geneva High School in 1958 in a class of 15 where she played forward on the girls’ basketball team. An outstanding athlete, she also competed in the Iowa State Free-Throwing Championship. Lois remained a farm girl at heart—she loved helping with chores and treasured the peaceful rhythm of rural Iowa life. Even after moving to the Quad-Cities, she often took short drives into the country to enjoy the familiar “aroma” of the farm animals she missed.

Her house was so clean you could perform surgery on the kitchen counter and probably find a cookie there too! Lois & Jim enjoyed travel, domestic & international as well. Their golf outings with friends were less about perfect swings and more about perfect company.

She was employed as office manager for the Monaghan Corporation in Rock Island, Illinois, retiring in July of 2006 after many years of dedicated service. In retirement, Lois loved playing cards with her Illinois and Iowa card clubs and cheering on her Iowa Hawkeyes, especially the men’s and women’s basketball teams. She also enjoyed the many activities offered at Grand Haven Retirement Community and cherished every visit from her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Kelly (Jeff) Cronkleton of Donahue, Iowa; her sons, Troy (Becky) Bittner of Edgerton, Wisconsin, and Lee (Angela) Bittner of Davenport, Iowa; her grandchildren, Samantha (Quentin) Smith and Sydney (Chase) Leamer, both of Donahue, and Alexandra and Trace Bittner of Edgerton; her great-grandchildren, Olivia, Charlotte, and Grayson Smith; her sisters, Ruby VanGerpen of Overland Park, Kansas, Judy Heitland of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jeanene Chipp of Latimer, Iowa; along with many other relatives and wonderful friends.

In addition to her husband, James, she was preceded in death by her sister and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Bob Taylor, Rich Heitland, and Darren Chipp.
