Magda S. Brodersen, 92, of rural Davenport, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026 surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 8, 2026 at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge, Iowa, where she was a member. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.
“Oma” as she was lovingly known by many, was born October 10, 1933 in Ost Bargum, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. She was one of eight children born to Peter & Christina (Johannsen) Hansen. She grew up in northern Germany on the family farm where she learned a strong work ethic.
Magda was united in marriage to Hans Nicolai Brodersen on Friday the 13th of May, 1955 in the Bargum church. She immigrated to the United States arriving July 14, 1955 after an eleven-day journey. The couple resided in Mount Joy where they built their home and raised their three children, Christa, Hans and Karin.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and had served on many committees at Faith Lutheran Church. She was a member of the American Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society (ASHHS) where she was in charge of serving refreshments. She attended water aerobic classes where she formed many close friendships with “the group” including monthly luncheons.
Magda and Hans embraced their German heritage by sharing their tradition, culture and love of their homeland with their family and the community.
She had the kindest heart, the gentlest hands and the sweetest smile. She would also give funny, loving and free advice and will be missed dearly by her family and friends.
Those left to honor her memory include her children, Christa (Larry) Nicklaus of Wheatland, Iowa, Hans (Kim) Brodersen of rural Davenport and Karin (Steve) Schmeink of rural Davenport.; thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; and her sister, Christa Hansen (Martin Peter) of Germany.
In addition to her husband, Hans, of 41 years, Magda was preceded in death by her parents; and six siblings.
