Obituary

Miona M. Morrell, 80, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, September 25, 2026.

Miona lived a life centered around people. She had a genuine love for others, a generous heart, and a wonderful ability to make people feel welcome. She was the kind of person who was always ready to lend a hand, and whenever someone needed help, Miona could be counted on to be there. Her family, friends, and the many people whose lives she touched will remember her for her caring spirit, her dedication to serving others, and the joy she brought to those around her.

A service to celebrate Miona’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. During the service, friends will be invited to share their memories and stories of Miona. Burial will follow at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the funeral home. Memorials in Miona’s memory may be made to the Canfield-Hughes VFW Post 9128 Auxiliary in Bettendorf.

Miona was born in Davenport on November 4, 1945, the daughter of Charles and Nora (Fee) Madden. She was a graduate of Davenport High School and remained proud of her Davenport beginnings throughout her life.

On February 13, 1970, Miona married Roger J. Morrell in Davenport. Together, they shared many years filled with love, family, and memories until Roger’s passing on April 2, 2006. Miona treasured the life they built together and carried his memory in her heart throughout the years that followed.

Miona worked at MercyOne Genesis for many years, most recently as a transporter. She retired shortly after Roger’s death in 2006. Her working years gave her yet another opportunity to connect with people, something that came naturally to Miona and was such an important part of who she was.

Miona’s life was also defined by her remarkable commitment to serving others. She was a Life Member and past president of the Canfield-Hughes VFW Auxiliary 9128 of Bettendorf. Her dedication extended throughout the state and beyond, as she served as president of the Iowa VFW Auxiliary in 1995-96, was a past National Council Member for the Iowa and Wisconsin VFW Auxiliaries and served as a National Color Bearer.

She had an especially tender heart for children and devoted countless hours to helping and encouraging them. Miona coached Dad’s Club Girls Softball for two years in the 1980s and served as a Girl Scout leader in the 1970s. In 1975, she organized the Girl Scout Troop in Perry, Iowa. She also coached the VFW Junior Bowling League from 1977 until 2016, sharing her love of bowling with generations of young people.

Miona was an avid bowler and loved the friendships and fellowship that came with the sport. She enjoyed traveling, collecting unicorns, and most of all, being around people. She truly was a “people person.” She had a knack for making friends wherever she went, and many of those friendships became lasting and treasured relationships.

Her family was especially dear to her. Miona leaves behind her daughter, Candace (Thorne) Stender and her husband, Brian, of Kissimmee, Florida; her son, Anthony “Tony” J. Morrell of Missouri; her beloved grandchildren, Joshua Stender, Ashley Ignasiak and her husband, Michael, Madisen Stender, Anthony Morrell and Nicholas Morrell; and her great-grandchildren, Theodore Ignasiak and Maverick Morrell.

She will also be lovingly remembered by her special friends, Penny Hurt, Cath Puffinburg, Kandy Swain and Peggy Holvoet, as well as the countless friends she made through her years of volunteering, bowling, coaching, and service.

Miona was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roger; her parents, Nora and Charles Madden; her brothers, Michael Madden and Charles F. Madden; her sister, Elizabeth Malone and her special friend, John Simmers.

Miona’s life was measured not only by the years she lived, but by the many lives she touched along the way. She gave freely of her time, opened her heart to others, and found happiness in being there when she was needed. Her kindness, her friendships, her love for children, and her devotion to her family and community will be a lasting part of the legacy she leaves behind.

Miona will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by all who knew and loved her.
