R. Lee (Bud) House

January 1, 1929 — November 4, 2023

With sadness we announce the passing of Bud House, our loved and devoted husband, dad, grandpa.

He was born in Davenport, Iowa, the middle child with two sisters.  He learned the art of agreeableness in his growing up years, later put to good use as the father of three daughters.

He met the love of his life, Dottie Padeskie, at Davenport High School, and they married at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, in 1950.  Together, they created homes, raised a family, built a business, went to church, travelled, doted on grandkids, cheered the Iowa Hawkeyes, and enjoyed many faithful friendships.

After serving in the army 1950-1952 in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Bud and Dottie returned to Davenport.  They raised three daughters, Anne, Kathy, and Mary in Bettendorf, then moved to Eldridge.  There they joined Faith Lutheran Church and ran House Feed and Seed. Customers became friends, and the feed store was a place for coffee, doughnuts and “the word on the street.”  After Bud’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, they moved to North Oaks, Minnesota in 2014 to be closer to their family.

Bud started working young with a paper route, delivering groceries, raising rabbits, and helping with his grandfather’s business. His work ethic, whether running a business or caring for a home, was exemplary.  He taught his children and grandchildren humility, generosity, kindness, faithfulness, integrity, selflessness, and lots of humor---all by example and not by preaching.

He loved to travel, as long as Dottie planned it and packed his suitcase. They visited nearly every state and 19 countries, but his favorite place was Minnesota where his daughters and their husbands, grandkids, and great-grandchildren lived.

He was heartbreakingly predeceased by his daughter, Mary, as well as by his parents, Ray and Jennie House, sisters, Mary Stark and Carol Voelliger, a sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, a nephew, and too many friends.
He will be missed dearly by Dottie, who held his hand till the end, his daughters and their husbands who were just like sons: Anne and Jim Afdahl and Kathy and Dan Kvinge; grandchildren Andy and Amy Afdahl, Michael and Amanda Afdahl, Martha and Christopher Thomas, John and Holly Kvinge, David and Andrea Afdahl, Anne Kvinge; 14 great-grandchildren: Erik, Jack, Mae, James, Evangeline, Isabella, William, Clara, Henry, Myra, Alden, Rosalind, Oscar and Ari, and by many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.

A celebration of Bud’s life will be held at Faith Lutheran Church (500 W. LeClaire Road, Eldridge, IA 52748) Friday, November 10 at 11:00 with a visitation beginning at 9:00.  Burial at Pine Hill Cemetery will follow a luncheon at the church. Chambers Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
A memorial service will be held at Waverly Gardens (5919 Centerville Road, North Oaks, Mn 55127) Friday, November 17 at 1:30.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are welcomed to Faith Lutheran Church, the Alzheimer’s Association, or Waverly Gardens.
Bud’s family will always be grateful for the care of Helen his last few years and for the community at Waverly Gardens, especially the earthly angels in The Arbor.

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others.  Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.

Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

Philippians 2:3-4
