Richard D. “Dick” McKay, 79, of Bettendorf, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Mercy One Genesis, Davenport.


Private family graveside services will be held at Rock Island National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held from 12:00 p.m. Noon – 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 12th at The Columbus Club, 111 W. 35th St., Davenport, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, is assisting the family with arrangements. 

Dick was born on September 20, 1946 in Nevada, Iowa, the son of Charles “Mack” and Garnet (Gallentine) McKay. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1964. On April 23, 1966, he married Margaret E. Derrick in Niles, Michigan. Dick served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1968. He worked in various departments at Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric Company (now, MidAmerican Energy) for over 30 years, prior to his retirement on June 1, 2005. Following his retirement, Dick kept busy helping his son, Jeff, at McKay Machinery. In his younger years, he played team softball for Murphy’s Tap, bowled with various bowling leagues, and coached Little League baseball.Dick loved horse racing and at one time, owned a racehorse. He loved all sports and was an avid Chicago Bears fan. 

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Margaret McKay of Bettendorf; sons, Jeff (Tori) McKay of Eldridge and Tom (Mandy) McKay of Kansas City, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Andrew (Nichole Clarke) McKay, Austin (Grace Andersen) McKay, Abby McKay, Adam McKay, Alex McKay, Gabe (Bailey) McKay, and Morgan McKay; three great-grandchildren, Theo, Ellie, and Ariah; siblings, Gary (Patty) McKay of Montana, Marilyn (Kent) Sulouff of Rock Island, and Darryl (Roberta) McKay of Montana; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.
