IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shawn G.
McKim
September 13, 1973 – December 28, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce Shawn Glenn McKim, 52, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family. He had battled Acute Myeloid Leukemia for two years.
Shawn was born September 13, 1973, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Ivan and Linda (Breon) McKim. He was united in marriage to Melissa E. Haworth on August 8, 1998. Shawn is survived by his wife, Melissa; his children, Ashley, Trevor, and Dillon; his parents, Ivan and Linda McKim of Knoxville, Illinois; his sister, Marcie Bent of Oneida, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ivan McKim Jr. and his sister, Teresa Honeyman.
Shawn was known for being a mathematical genius. He received a Bachelors in Mathematics with an emphasis in Statistics from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. He later received his Masters in Business Analytics from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He was employed by John Deere since 2008 with his most recent position being a Data Scientist. Prior to that he had worked at HON in Muscatine, Iowa, Heatilator in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and CCL Custom Manufacturing in Danville, Illinois. Shawn loved numbers so much that his mother would find him asleep with the phone book at 3 years old. He had a passion for evaluating baseball statistics and developed a formula for evaluating top baseball players he called the McKim rating. At one time he had a website dedicated to this passion called Nationalstatstime.com.
Shawn was an avid sports lover, supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also coached baseball for several years as both a young adult and an adult. His passion for sports and coaching led him to found the Eastern Iowa Vipers travel baseball club for which he took great pride in. Shawn served as president and coach for several years, where he not only taught young men the love of baseball, but also the importance of the sportsmanship, poise, and dedication that he himself was an example of. Whether it was to himself, his kids, or his players, Shawn always emphasized that it is who you are that matters more than any trophy.
Shawn was quick-witted and could always fill a room with laughter. Any joke was ten times funnier when you heard his infectious laugh. He was known for his love of ice cream and milk duds. But, most importantly, he was known for his strength in character and the immense amount of love he had to share. Everyone who knew him knew that his children were his pride and joy and his wife was the love of his life. Throughout his life, he was a pillar of strength for his family, even after his cancer diagnosis. He is loved deeply, and will be missed by many.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 2, 2026, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bettendorf where he was a member since 2008 and at one point served as chair of the finance committee. There will be a luncheon to follow the funeral at Asbury United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held on Thursday (New Year’s Day) from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf.
