William F. Shumate, 69, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, February 13, 2004 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
He war born June 19, 1934 in Laclede County, Missouri, the son of Tom & Eula (Shadrick) Shumate. On December 15, 1973, he was united in marriage to Opal Darlene (Boyer) Hendry in Moline, Illinois.
William was employed as a truck driver with the Mueller-Bahnsen Lumber Company of Moline, Illinois, retiring in 1991. Over the years, he also did a lot of tree cutting & maintenance in the Quad-Cities and in July of 1964, he & Art VanOsdel removed the “Big Green Tree” along the river in LeClaire. It was rumored that Indians signed a peace treaty under this same tree many years ago.
He was a former member of the National Rifle Association and the Teamsters Union. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing & camping.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Opal Darlene; his daughter, Robin Mallek of Delmar, Iowa; his sons & daughter-in-law, Steve Shumate, Monty & Anne Shumate and Rory Shumate, all of Bettendorf; his step-daughters, Gloria McGee of Bettendorf, Beverly Schulz-Draese & her husband, Stephen of Davenport and Patricia Hill of Bettendorf; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three “grand-pups,” his mother, Eula Shumate of Mediapolis, Iowa; his sisters & brothers-in-law, Shirley & Gary Nations of Wapello, Iowa and Hazel & John Nations of Forsythe, Missouri; his brother, Carl Shumate of Mediapolis; his sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Sis & Ray Wright and their family of Indianola, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and his beloved dog, “Ladybug.”
He was preceded in death by his father; his sister, Patsy Rickey; his brother, James Boyd Shumate; and his step-daughter, Doris “Bunky” Dilley.
