Wilma I. Atkinson, 91, of Davenport, formerly of Bettendorf, passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024 at Jersey Ridge Place.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 12th at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to King’s Harvest Pet Rescue No-Kill Shelter, Davenport.
Wilma was born on October 16, 1932 in Davenport, the daughter of Cletis and Alma (Kraklio) Smith. She graduated from Davenport High School. On June 27, 1953, she married Rodman W. “Rod” Atkinson at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rock Island. In her earlier years, Wilma worked as a secretary at Alcoa and in the summer, she enjoyed working at Brockways strawberry farm. Above all, Wilma was a devoted wife and mother to her five children. She was known for her delicious baked goods and homemade jam. Wilma loved dogs, growing beautiful flowers, and hummingbirds.
Those left to honor her memory are her daughters, Gail Atkinson of Henderson, Nevada and Carol Atkinson of Bettendorf; sons, Gary Atkinson of Moline, Steven (Cindy) Atkinson of Forest, Virginia, and Ret. US Air Force Senior MSGT. Scott (Alicia) Atkinson of Henderson, Nevada; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; brothers, Brian (Rita) Smith and Darrell (Anita) Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rod; brother, Larry Smith; and her canine companions, Jiggs, Peanut, and Abby.
