Vernon Egland

August 4, 1932 — February 10, 2021

Vernon C. Egland, 88, formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bettendorf.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services on Saturday at the church.  Face masks will be required and social distancing will be observed.  Burial will follow at Davenport Memorial Park.  Memorials may be made to Lutheran Indian Ministries.

Vernon was born August 4, 1932 in Milford Township, Iowa, the son of Casper & Anna (Olsen) Egland. He graduated from Roland High School and went on to serve in the Army (and the next 12 years in the reserves), then attended Iowa State University through the GI Bill, studying industrial engineering. He subsequently moved to Bettendorf, working at J.I. Case and then American Air Filter. He was united in marriage to Marilyn L. Parchert on July 30, 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Buffalo Prairie Township, Illinois.

Vern was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bettendorf for over 50 years, and most recently, a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Peoria.   He was eager to serve his Lord in many different capacities, including church custodian, Vacation Bible School, church elder, church council, endowment committee chair and Bible Study.

Over the years he enjoyed college sports, baseball, golfing, bowling, gardening, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles and spending time with his grandchildren. He could often be found helping neighbors, mowing lawns and scooping snow.

He moved to Peoria in December 2019 to be closer to family, becoming a cherished, everyday part of his son’s family’s life.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and sisters-in law (Stan and Joan Egland; Glen and June Egland), and his wife Marilyn. He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law Frank and Barb Egland of Battle Creek, Michigan, his son and daughter-in-law, Keith & Lorie Egland of Peoria and grandchildren Caleb, Jillian, and Carissa.

He will be best remembered for his kind heart, his wisdom and his unfailing wit.  He will be deeply missed by family and friends who have been lovingly supportive during his battle with pancreatic cancer.
